Gerlach Ranch History
Jeff & Donna Gerlach and family Kyle, KayLa and Paul Berndt
Our herd consists of approximately 125 head of mostly Line One influence females with a few polled genetics injected in the last three years. Donna and I started out in 1985 with two registered cows. We bought 5 cows and a bull from Rausch Herefords in the spring of 1986. Over the next few years we added small numbers of cows from most of South Dakota’s Hereford dispersals, including Lewis EE, Harold Meyerink, Bones Hereford Ranch, Baker Herefords, Van Overshield Herefords, John Grassel and Shield Bar Herefords.
In 1997 we were able to purchase 13 pairs from Richard Brown in Broken Bow Nebraska from which OXH Patti 5317 became our first ET Donor.
In 2005 we added 12 bred cows from the Shield Bar Hereford dispersion, Hulett Wyo. In 2009 we purchased 40 Head of Shield Bar Hereford cows from Raymond and Dalarie Reisland, Newell S.D.
In 2012 we added 9 bred cows, 3 heifers and the Brink U800 Bull from Richard Brink, Elkader, Iowa.
Our herd bulls are LCS Monument 8001 from Leroy Scott, LCX He’s A Truck 104 owned with Larry Crane, Keith Eichler and the Truck Syndicate. Brink U800 from Richard Brink, LCX P606 Keepsake 1206 from Larry Crane, THR Thor 2216Z from Bill Thorstenson, and home raised sires JWG 555R Domino 235Z and JWG 1172 Domino 311 ET.
Some recent highlights were having the 2012 Grand Champion Bull with LCX He’s A Truck 104 ET at the South Dakota State Fair. We aalso raised JWG Serendipity 1114, who the Tucker Family made a two time national Jr. Champion at the 2012 National Jr. Show in Grand Island, Neb. and the 2013 Denver Stock Show.
It was also a tremendous honor to be named the 2013 Hereford Enthusiast of the Year from the South Dakota Hereford Association at their Annual Meeting & Banquet in November 2013.
At Gerlach Herefords we pride ourselves on strict culling for good udders, low maintenance cows that raise calves with eye appeal, sound structure, and gain ability.
Our commitment to our customers is to not sell a bull that we would not use ourselves.
We invite you to visit Gerlach Herefords at any time and look forward to serving you with your Hereford needs.
